Cassie's Blog: Austin's Heroin Problem - 02/04/14
I grew up in Austin's modern-day suburbia of Northwest Hills. My large group of friends is still to this day very close, and you could say our lives were fairly ordinary along the way.
But, I often think about one of my good friends. Most people would say he was a poster child for Anderson High School " a football star, athletic, handsome, funny, nice, artistic and musically talented. What a lot people did not know is that he was heroin addict too.
I've never forgotten that phone call when he died of an overdose at 19 years old.
Truth is, drugs are everywhere. The recent heroin-related deaths among big stars like Glee's Cory Monteith, and most recently Philip Seymour Hoffman, has brought to light the heroin epidemic the country is facing right now. I wanted to know what Central Texas is up against.
Law enforcement and drug recovery center officials told me heroin abuse in Central Texas is a huge problem, and it is bigger than you think. Heroin is extending its grip into the suburbs and stems from a variety of reasons.
My eye-opening story will run on Thursday at 10 on KEYE-TV. After, go on to my Facebook page and tell me what you think and if you are concerned.
