Investigating a Danger on the Roads - 11/07/13
Bettie Cross, KEYE TV Reporter
Every once in a while I see a TV news story that has such an impact I'm compelled to see if a similar problem exists right here in Austin. That's what happened after I watched a story put together by a team of journalists at Minnesota TV station, KARE.
A grieving mom shared the painful story of losing her husband and daughter in the hope it would prevent other towing accidents. An empty flatbed trailer unhitched from a pickup, crossed the centerline and plowed into the family's SUV. The very preventable cause of the accident was a missing clip from the hitch pin. One of the two required safety chains was also missing.
Photojournalist Kevin Riley and I are investigating the dangers we face on the road because of improperly attached trailers. You'll see the devastating impact of one big bump in the road. We'll also show you the simple steps that will keep drivers and passengers safe.
Join us Tuesday at 10 p.m. to hear from an Austin victim how one careless moment can have dramatic consequences.
