Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter Lane's Ribbon Cutting Cermony

Updated: Friday, March 23 2012, 03:32 PM CDT
By Ken Wilson

A celebration of the grand opening of the fifth Alamo Drafthouse Theater in Austin took place yesterday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.  Tim and Karrie League opened this one on Slaughter Lane just off of Mopac.

Director Robert Rodriguez was the special guest for the ceremony and gave a speech about the first time he met Tim and Karrie League and how brilliant that are to have opened a theater such as this.  He also added how much the Alamo Drafthouse means to him, noting "some of my best movie memories were made here."  Following the opening remarks Robert and Tim participated in a ceremonial sabering of a champagne bottle.

The one major thing that makes this Alamo Drafthouse different is the adjacent stand-alone cocktail lounge called “The 400 Rabbits.”

To welcome Austinites to the new venue, 400 Rabbits will be initiating 400 lucky locals into an exclusive perks program dubbing them "The 400 Rabbits." "The 400 Rabbits" will be determined by various methods including a Facebook Scavenger Hunt, Radio giveaways, onsite Geeks Who Drink Trivia nights and more. Visit www.400rabbitsbar.com for a complete list of details and contest schedule. Each of "The 400 Rabbits" will receive a variety of prizes, including a 20 percent discount on their food and drinks in the 400 Rabbits lounge for one year and exclusive invitations to special events and tastings. The 400 Rabbits, who's name is derived from the Aztec goddess Mayahuel, is serving a bar menu centered around agave spirits (tequila, mezcal, sotol) and food inspired by Latin American street fare.

Another nice change is that you don’t have to crawl underneath the table beam to get to your seat.  Every two seats will share one small table so there is an open area either to the right or left for you providing easy access to sit down.  There are eight screens and down each of the two hallways there are film cabinets where Tim League saved hundreds Chinese films from getting thrown away.Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter Lane's Ribbon Cutting Cermony
