Bettie's Box Office: Cloud Atlas Movie Review

Updated: Wednesday, October 24 2012, 09:54 PM CDT

Remember the old "connect-the-dots" game from your childhood? When you'd start, the dots looked like a giant jumbled mess, and as you put them together, they slowly started to form a picture. It's the same with Cloud Atlas, an ambitious movie that spends the first hour just giving you dots.

Those dots span 5 different places and time periods, but the central cast is always familiar - Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Bae Doo Na, and Hugo Weaving. The makeup artists worked overtime on Cloud Atlas, but the essence of each character is recognizable.

Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. You'll need patience to wait for the plot points to connect and to understand a sort of space-age Cajun dialect that permeates one of the story lines. You'll also need a large popcorn: the film's running time is a whopping 2 hours and 43 minutes.

Cloud Atlas wants to be epic and you will want to like it, but it may be overreaching just a bit. When the dots are finally connected, it's not always a pretty picture. Cloud Atlas is rated R for violence, language, sexuality/nudity and some drug use. The film opens Friday, October 26.
