Bettie's Box Office: Guardians of the Galaxy Review

Updated: Friday, August 1 2014, 01:29 PM CDT

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy may turn out to be the savior of the summer for Hollywood. The film that hits theaters on Friday, has a shot at becoming the top August movie debut of all time.

It's a scrappy film, with a lot of swagger. The guardians take a smart aleck approach to a save-the-universe plotline.

Chris Pratt calls himself "Star Lord" - but he can't get anyone else to do it. He's a child of the 80's who shoots laser guns but still carries a Walkman with a 70's pop playlist. Zoe Saldana is the green alien, Gamora, who may - or may not - be double-crossing her evil masters. Bradley Cooper gives voice to the gruff bounty hunter raccoon named Rocket, and Vin Diesel is the voice of few words as the giant, tree-like alien named Groot.

This is not the best movie of the summer, but it is the most fun. Guardians of the Galaxy is light-hearted popcorn fare that takes the Marvel movie universe into the cosmos. I thought it ran a little long (right at 2 hours), but it's definitely worth the full ticket price.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens Friday, August 1 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language.
