Bettie's Box Office: Now You See Me Review

Updated: Friday, May 31 2013, 04:22 PM CDT

Master magicians will do something right in front of you and defy you to figure out how they pulled it off. So when four magicians snatch millions from a locked bank vault in France and make it rain money on their Las Vegas audience, the police - and the FBI and Interpol - take notice. And that's just the first trick these magicians have up their sleeves.

Now You See Me has a great cast, including Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco as the pompous prestidigitators. Mark Ruffalo and Melanie Laurent are the investigators trying to keep up with them mentally and physically. You might expect more magic with this caliber of a cast, but even when the plot gets preposterous they are always fun to watch.

If you like "whodunit" movies, then you'll probably enjoy this "howdtheydoit" movie. But, just like with magic acts, if you look too closely you’ll sap the film of its fun. This is one of those movies that makes you second-guess each character's motives and loyalties right up until the closing credits. After all, deception and misdirection are a magician's stock in trade.

Now You See Me is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 for language, some action and sexual content.
