Bettie's Box Office: Warm Bodies Movie Review

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 05:06 PM CDT

I can almost hear the way this movie was pitched to the studio execs: "It's like Twilight meets Shaun of the Dead!" Like Twilight, it’s the story of a forbidden love between the living and the not-quite-dead (substitute zombie for vampire).

And like Shaun, it takes a more self-aware lighthearted approach to the zombie genre. Watch really closely and you’ll even see that Warm Bodies is a tiny homage to Romeo and Juliet.

Most of the movie centers around “R” (Nicholas Hoult) who fell victim to the zombie epidemic and can’t remember anything about his former life. We can hear him thinking clearly, even though he can only express himself through grunts and strained speech. For some reason, he’s able to curb his physical appetite for blood and brains when it comes to Julie (Teresa Palmer). She’s one of the “uninfected” who lives with the other remaining humans in the walled city.

“R” rescues Julie from a zombie attack and protects her, but they face other threats: the “boneys,” who are zombies that are too far gone to be controlled, and Julie’s father, General Grigio (John Malkovich), who also happens to be the leader of the humans and is very anti-zombie after the death of his wife.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Warm Bodies will be a good zombie rom-com movie date for the teen and 20’s crowd.  The effects are fun, the leads have good chemistry and the dialog is pretty clever. It opens Fri., Feb. 1. Warm Bodies is rated PG-13 for “zombie violence and some language.”
