Billy Elliot the Musical

Updated: Tuesday, December 4 2012, 08:40 PM CST

Based on the international smash-hit film, Billy Elliot is an inspiring story about one British boy’s career in ballet.  He was a boxer and has stumbled into a ballet class, but worries what his family will think of him.

This musical is brought to us by director Stephen Daldry, Elton John with an unparalleled score, choreographer Peter Darling, and an incredible cast.  Darling uses not just ballet in his choreography, but tap, hip hop, jazz, acrobatics, folk dancing, and even walking to celebrate dance to tell a narrative.  That diversity was very deliberate.  “I didn’t want to convey the notion that only one form of movement is of value,” says Darling.  “I wanted to use as many different forms of movement as possible.”

Tap is used in Billy Elliot more than ballet to not only express joy, most notably in the finale, but anger as well.  Darling uses tap in a dark scene called “Angry Dance”, when Billy is ordered by his father to give up ballet.

Come delight in this heart-warming tale that will make you want to follow your own dreams.  It even has a little Michael Jackson moonwalking!
