The Austin Chamber Music Center will celebrate the 100th birthday of the influential composer with a five hour marathon concert featuring more than 30 works and 50 musicians.

Austin's new music groups will join forces with the Austin Chamber Music Center for a five hour marathon concert featuring more than 50 musicians performing more than 30 works by the influential 20th Century composer, John Cage.  The "Happy 100th Birthday Mr. Cage!" concert will be held on Saturday, September 8th, starting at 3 p.m. at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.

Cage would have been 100 years old on September 5th, and concert halls around the world have been filled with sound - and silence - commemorating his work.  The composer's music is no anomaly here in Central Texas, since the Austin Chamber Music Center has been celebrating Cage for quite some time.

Now in its twelfth year, Artistic Director Michelle Schumann's "Happy Birthday Mr. Cage!" has become an institution in Austin, collecting a dedicated fan base for the annual celebration. New Music Co-op has been incorporating Cage's repertoire into concerts for more than a decade, and Line Upon Line Percussion have been energetically working their way through the composer's percussion repertoire.

The three groups will be joined by the Texas Choral Consort for the concert celebration that will represent the range and beauty of Cage's compositional output - and not just his "greatest hits," Schumann noted.  Drawing from a long list of works stretching from 1931 to 1992, co-curators Brent Baldwin of the Texas Choral Consort, Matt Teodori from Line Upon Line, Travis Weller from New Music Co-op and Schumann from the Austin Chamber Music Center have crafted five one-hour concerts to explore the many and varied sides of the insanely-inventive composer.

The five one-hour performances will run from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Tickets are $15 for general admission

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is located at 600 River Street.  For advance tickets and more information, visit www.AustinChamberMusic.org.
