Maladies Screens At SXSW

Second time director, Carter, tells the story of James (played by James Franco), who was a soap opera actor, but retired because of his mental state. James and his mentally ill sister, Patricia (Fallon Goodson), live with their painter friend, Catherine (Catherine Keener), at her home on the coast. James seeks his passion as a writer, yet his condition holds him back. With listening to the phone receiver when no one is on the other end, turning the radio on and off most of the night playing mind games with himself, and trying to learn braille even though he can see, James knows that he may never finish. He makes a pact with Catherine that if one of them dies, they'll finish each other's work.

A very offbeat film, it draws parallels of Franco's own life; soap opera acting, writing, and trying to do it all. The cast is hard to beat with David Strathain added to the mix playing Franco's Aunt. Yes, his aunt! Even though it has a great cast, the story falls flat. It handles mental illness in an accepting way, but doesn't really ever acknowledge the problem.  Maladies Screens At SXSW
