One-on-one With Cyndi Lauper on her TONY nomination

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 05:06 PM CDT

We're just two days away from the TONY Awards and a pop icon is stealing the spotlight with her first nomination. Cyndi Lauper for Best Original Score for the musical Kinky Boots.

Since the nomination, Lauper has been receiving widespread support. Several celebrities and cast members even appeared in a special YouTube video as a tribute to Lauper. Celebrities like Kelly Ripa, Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O'Donnell lip-synched to the hit "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."

We asked Lauper about the video during our one-on-one interview.

"I loved the video of all the TV hosts and cast members celebrating your nomination," I asked. Have you seen it?  "I was crying. Were you crying? I couldn't believe it! You see how welcoming the Broadway community is?" Lauper responded.

Lauper is already a Grammy and Emmy award winning artist.

"How does it feel to now be nominated for a TONY? I asked. "Right? I gotta get that cabinet open in case I do win and put it next to the Grammy & the Emmy," Lauper responded. "No, but to be acknowledged is a great thing."

Kinky Boots leads all productions with 13 TONY nominations. The 67th annual TONY Awards will broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Sunday, June 9 at seven o'clock on KEYE TV.
