Running October 4th to 21st at The City Theatre, the play by Ron Hutchinson explores the turmoil endured in the making of the legendary 1939 movie Gone with the Wind.

Penfold Theatre Company opens its 2013-13 Season with the comedic play Moonlight and Magnolias, playing The City Theatre from October 4th to 21st.  Written by Ron Hutchinson, the script is based on actual events surrounding the making of the legendary movie Gone with the Wind.

In 1939, after just three weeks of shooting an adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's best-selling bodice-ripper, producer David O. Selznick halts production, fires the director and trashes the screenplay.  With his career and a small fortune on the line, Selznick turns to famed director Victor Fleming and reporter-turned-script doctor Ben Hecht.

Held hostage in Selznick's office for five straight days, the men re-write the entire film with nothing but bananas, peanuts and passion to keep them going.  Commissioned by the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in 2004, playwright Hutchinson's hilarious telling proves that truth is stranger than fiction with its behind-the-scenes peek at the precarious birth of one of the most famous movies of all time.

Penfold Theatre's production is directed by Austin Chronicle arts editor Robert Faires, who has made use of Austin's Harry Ransom Center - home of the David O. Selznick collection - to add further detail and texture to the story.  The cast features Dave Buckman, Ryan Crowder, Jay Fraley and Aidan Sullivan.

Performances will run Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m.  Tickets are $25 for the opening night on Thursday, October 6th, and $20 for regular general admission and $18 for students and seniors.

The October 6th opening night performance will feature a post-performance party with the cast.  On October 13th, Penfold will host a double feature, with the play starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a free, late-night showing of Gone with the Wind, beginning at 9 p.m.

The City Theatre is located at 3823 Airport Blvd. Suite D.   For more information and tickets, visit www.PenfoldTheatre.org.
