Texas Town Supports Randy Travis' Fight For Life

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:06 PM CDT

Country star Randy Travis has a large stable of supporters as he continues to battle a viral heart infection.

Fans from the small north Texas community of Tioga have an even bigger stake in the Grammy Award-winner’s health. After all, to them, Travis is not just another golden-throated voice crooning from the jukebox – he’s their neighbor, friend and regular dinner companion.

"He likes to come out and support this town and a lot of people love him," said Lilian Avila, a patron at one local barbeque restaurant Travis is said to frequent. "I’m sure everybody is a little concerned. Lots of prayers, yes, so he gets to come back home."

Travis reportedly underwent heart surgery after checking into a Dallas hospital on Sunday. His publicist said he was admitted with viral cardiomyopathy.

Travis is one of country music's top-selling artists. He’s won seven Grammys, 10 Academy of Country Music Awards, and ten American Music Awards.

More recently, he's made headlines with a string of arrests for assault and public intoxication.
