Cycling Great Encourages Austin Minorities To Ride

Updated: Friday, February 24 2012, 05:33 PM CST
Major Taylor Austin, a minority-focused cycling club, is officially launching with a weekend of events on February 23. Major Taylor Austin's mission is to inspire a love of cycling in minority communities as a healthy alternative mode of transportation, a competitive sport, a way of staying fit and as a way of building community through subculture.

The weekend of February 23-26 is called "Growing The Movement" and will feature several events celebrating African Americans' place in the history of cycling with rides, panel discussions, a bike art show, parties, and a neighborhood tour preceding the African American Community Heritage Festival.

The featured guest for the weekend is Nelson Vails, the first African American Olympic medalist in cycling and a 2009 inductee into the Cycling Hall of Fame. Four days of riding and social events are planned for registered summit attendees while three premiere events are free and open to the public.
