Renowned Cake Makers Bake Up An Artsy Event In Austin

Updated: Friday, February 24 2012, 05:29 PM CST
This weekend here in Austin, the legends of cake have come to teach their craft.  Yes there are legends of cake.  “They kind of get to be well known.  If you’re good, people find out,” explains Kyla Myers of Capital Confectioners.

Master cake creators from around the country…even some international stars in the baking biz…are here to divulge their secrets in a series of classes for all layers.  Some sessions are for beginners, but others are for more serious students.  No need for pen and paper in those advanced classes.  They’re more likely to require the use of supplies like power saws, scaffolding and plumbing tools. “Cake ladies these days spend a lot of time in Home Depot,” says Myers.

Thanks to all those cable TV cake shows, we’re told the art of baking and decorating is undergoing something of a renaissance.  That said, the theme of this year’s show is fitting, “This year we are doing Cakealot, kind of like Spamalot or Camelot,” explains Myers.  “Cakelot is the Renaissance theme and we mean that in the very broadest sense of the term.”

For $10 you can come for a day and feast (your eyes) on the confectionery masterpieces.  And  how is this for some icing on the cake?  Kids 18 and under get in free.

The event is at the North Austin Event Center (10601 North Lamar Boulevard) Saturday and Sunday.
