2 Killed, 23 Injured Car Plows Into SXSW Crowd

Two people died and 23 were injured when a car running from police crashed into a crowd at the South by Southwest Festival in Downtown Austin.
The crash happened just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday. It began at the I-35 frontage road at 9th Street. Police were trying to pull over a silver Toyota for suspected drunk driving.
Police say the car turned into a blocked road full of people. Two police cars followed him. The driver almost hit an officer, went into the crowd, hit a moped killing a man and woman. The car then hit a taxi and parked van. It ended at 11th and Red River Street outside the Mohawk club.
The suspect ran from the scene. Officers used a Taser to subdue him. He was not injured.
Police say he faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.
Of the 23 people injured, five are in critical condition.

Austin/Travis County EMS report
Austin/Travis County EMS received a call for a car through a barricade at a high rate of speed outside a SXSW venue this morning at 12:32 a.m.
ATCEMS treated and transported 25 patients (5 critical, 5 serious, 13 minimal) and ATCEMS pronounced 2 dead on scene.
Of the 5 critical, one patient had CPR performed and Medics obtained a return of pulses. All critical patients were transported from the scene in under 15 minutes and ALL patients were off the scene in 47 minutes to three area hospitals at 1:19 a.m.
ATCEMS handled the incident with 14 assets (3 special response units, 2 motorcycle medics, 7 ground ambulances, and 2 commanders). The incident covered a 2 block area on Red River St. from 9th to 11th.
St. David's HealthCare Statement
A total of 17 patients were transported to St. David's HealthCare hospitals - 13 were taken to St. David's South Austin Medical Center, and four were taken to St. David's Medical Center. Of those patients, 13 of them were treated and released (or are in the process of being released). Of the remaining patients, one is in good condition; one is in fair condition; and two patients are in serious condition.

Red River will be closed for most of day at 10th Street between frontage of 35 and Neches and parts of 11th Street. Investigators hope to have streets open by teh beginning of rush hour, but Red River will be closed most of the morning.
