5 Suspects Identified In Downtown Beating Caught On Camera

Updated: Wednesday, February 12 2014, 05:43 PM CST

Police say they've identified five of the six suspects seen in a cell phone video circulating online that shows two men getting beat and robbed near Downtown Austin's entertainment district.

The video, which was recorded in January, appears to show an angry mob targeting the men near the 900 block of East 6th Street.

At one point one of the victims is knocked to the ground and kicked in the head.

At a press conference Wednesday to announce the break in the case, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo blamed alcohol for the fight. He said when they received word of the fight officers were on scene in three minutes.

Chief Acevedo said they were closing in on identifying the sixth suspect in the video.

The men are facing charges of theft, theft with injury and assault with injury.

Chief Acevedo said race played no role in the beating.
