APD Conducts Follow Up Smoke Shop Inspection

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:08 PM CDT

The Austin Police Department continues to fight back against smoke shops selling synthetic marijuana in Southeast Austin.

KEYE TV went out with Sgt. James Dixon and undercover officers to see if business caught in the past were complying.

Our first stop was The Smoke Shack on Airport Boulevard.

"Last time we went inside this location we seized a few pounds. We are going to check back and see if they are in compliance with our request," said Sgt. Dixon.

Our cameras were not allowed inside, but after checking Sgt. Dixon found the business was in compliance.

"I think he knows it's probably better to not deal in Kush than it is to deal in Kush," he said.

Our next stop was The Jamaican Smoke Shop on Montopolis Drive. An undercover officer filmed video for us explaining that they found Kush and other synthetic drugs in plain sight last time.

Now it's a different story.

"The good thing is we didn't find any Kush or bath salts. Looks like they are going to stay up to code and we are going to come back periodically to inspect the stores," said Sgt. Dixon.

Elizabeth Grant, 23, says she got her fix off these drugs and has a warning for others.

"I would have seizures. If I was having a conversation with somebody, my brain would just stop," Grant said.

Now sober she is seeing the dangerous side effects.

"I get permanent shakes. I have body convulsions. My thyroid is terrible," Grant said.

Police say that's why they want the drugs off the shelves.

"Once they know they can be prosecuted for selling Kush, I think they are going to stay away from it to maintain their business," Sgt. Dixon said.

APD says they will continue undercover operations to see if the stores stay up to code and if any charges should be filed.
