APD Real Time Crime Center Reduces Crime

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:08 PM CDT

At Austin Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, officers monitor the city's streets 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Since 2011 Austin Police have been keeping an eye on us.

"We have some cameras that are fixed on a particular location. We also have cameras we can physically control here from the real time crime center and in doing so, we're allowed to move that camera to track a vehicle, an individual or even a disturbance that happened down Sixth Street," says Lt. Jeff Hampton.

During the day, two officers monitor our every move. At night, two more join the watch party. Thirty-one cameras are posted across the city in high crime areas, four in the Rundberg area.

"Historically that's an area where we have a lot of narcotics, prostitution, assaults and theft," says Lt. Hampton.

Since the center's launch, officers have been able to record street video to use as evidence in hundreds of court cases. From August to the end of 2012, 56 times HALO officers were able to monitor criminal activity on from the cameras, call officers in the area and make an immediate arrest.

"We recently had an incident in early March where an officer was able to identify a vehicle that we believe was used in a bank robbery. We were able to link that bank robber to four other robbery of businesses," says Lt. Hampton.

Now the department wants more eyes in the sky, but that will depend on funding. The Real Time Crime Center cost $750,000 to setup. It was paid for by grants.
