Are Austin Police Numbers Keeping Up With Population?

Updated: Monday, June 3 2013, 10:10 PM CDT

A month long drug dealing sting over the past couple of weeks led to 70 arrest warrants, but there is some disturbing information behind those numbers.

Twenty-three of the 50 suspects are in jail -- which means more than half of these bad guys are still on the street.

And it seems the key to getting them and keeping other crime under control long term means city council opening up its wallet.

Pink Avocado calls itself the best catering company in Austin, but it's what happens outside the business that shows what some consider the worst of Austin.

All around you hear of assaults happening.

Gabe Hernandez has worked there two years. He's seen addicts dump their drugs in his dumpster, even the back of his truck

"When you're leaving at night and you see and know that a lot of that stuff is going on you're going to have to be concerned about your safety," he says.

Police Chief Art Acevedo says a solution may be coming that could help Gabe and others feel safe -- 92 sworn positions.

On Monday, Acevedo took the request to the public safety commission, saying it's proven to increase safety.

A previous initiative downtown reduced crime 44 percent. And that's not the only proof. "We put together a traffic initiative on Sunday nights for 11 weeks and we went from 25 percent fatalities to zero fatalities," says Chief Acevedo.

The problem is getting city council to approve the hires, because new employees mean more money.

But more officers means a continued decrease in violent crime, and a potential decrease in property crime which seems to be plaguing the Austin metro area.
