Updated: Monday, June 3 2013, 06:10 PM CDT

Police say they've arrested almost half the suspects they've been searching for over the past couple of weeks during an operation to bust up "open air" drug markets in the Downtown Austin area.

The Austin Police Department calls the narcotics sting Operation Safe Assistance. They say it focused on drug dealers and buyers who were preying on the vulnerable population in the downtown area, many of whom seek assistance from social services.

Police say the primary areas of activity are near 4th and Sabine Streets and the area surrounding the ARCH and Salvation Army.

Police say 50 people were issued charges of delivery of a controlled substance, some with multiple charges. Twenty-three of them have been arrested.

According to police, the 50 charged individuals have been responsible for over 3,200 encounters with APD.

The suspects arrested in this sting will face jail time ranging from 180 days to 20 years in jail and will face fines up to $10,000

According to police these suspects had previously been charged or suspected to have been involved in:
