Austin Police Discuss Possible Downtown Dangers

Updated: Tuesday, February 18 2014, 06:52 PM CST

The Austin Police Department is trying to bring together downtown businesses and employees to get their input on downtown dangers.

The concerns took center stage after a viral video of a fight just down the street from police headquarters hit the internet.

The police department clearly saw the video, and wanted to get a conversation started with people downtown addressing their worries and the best ways to keep everyone safe.

They want the community to know they do have their safety in mind and want to be responsive to their concerns.

Police officials tell KEYE TV the downtown area is such a happening spot they have had issues with people being preyed on coming out of the businesses late at night.

The timeframe is between 2-4 a.m.

"Especially after two when the bars close," said Assistant Chief Raul Munguia. "You have a lot of patrons that have had a little too much to drink and they don't make very wise decisions at that point."

Officials do stress it is one of the safest downtown areas in the country, and ramping up staff has deterred crime in the past.

The meeting scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled due to a lack of turnout.

Police hope to have another meeting for the public to weigh in next week.
