Detectives Question Serial Rape Suspect Overnight

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:08 PM CDT

This morning, it's video you'll only see on KEYE TV: police arresting an accused serial rapist who's left women in Northeast Austin on edge. Edgar Casas is suspected of committing a string of sexual assaults dating back to last August, which now also includes the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Police brought Casas to the Travis County Jail from Austin Police Department's downtown headquarters just before 4 a.m. to be processed. The overnight arrest comes after an 8-month-long intense search.

An APD lieutenant says shortly after Casas' arrest Tuesday around 10:30 p.m., officers brought Casas to the Sex Crimes Unit office in North Austin a short distance away, where detectives questioned him. He remained there until officers brought him to the downtown headquarters around 3 a.m, and an hour later, to the Travis County Jail.

Casas is expected to be booked on two sexual assault charges. One charge, sexual assault, is for allegedly attacking a woman early last month near I-35 and Hwy 183. The other charge, aggravated sexual assault of a child, is for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old girl in an apartment complex laundry room in November. Casas is suspected in several other attacks in North Central Austin. The total bond amount for the two charges is $275,000.

A lieutenant we spoke with early Wednesday could not comment specifically on next steps in the case but said generally in cases like this where someone is suspected of multiple assaults, they'll bring the other victims to try to identify the suspect from a lineup. He also said detectives can come back to the jail at any point to question the suspect.

KEYE TV's own Angel Covarrubias helped police track down Casas, hitting the streets Tuesday with photographer Brian Bell, passing out flyers to the community showing a picture of Casas outlining the attacks. A tip led him to Casas’ home. He alerted APD, who were able to find him.
