Does Crime Breed In Certain Neighborhoods?

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:07 PM CDT
The Austin Police Department is targeting high crime areas and working to break the chain of criminal activity.

Commander Fred Fletcher says since January, there have been 182 arrests in the Montopolis neighborhood, 25 were drug arrests.

Fletcher says while arrests are up in southeast Austin, crime is down 17 percent.

“We only had four burglaries in that entire year to date compared to 22 at the same time last year,” said Fletcher while talking about the neighborhood.

He is working with neighborhood association to fight back.

Delwin Goss is the president of the Montopolis Community Alliance. He originally moved to the area to gain access to drugs.

“It was easier to get a crack rock at three in the morning than it was to get a loaf of bread,” said Goss.

Now 13 years sober and counting, Goss is working with the community and police to turn around the neighborhood for generations to come.

“Montopolis is not a safe haven that your fathers or grandfathers grew up with, where you can do what you want and get away with it,” said Goss.

The Rundberg area in North Austin is also working with police to reduce crime. Does Crime Breed In Certain Neighborhoods?
