Drugged Driving Cases Up In Central Texas

Updated: Thursday, June 20 2013, 09:52 PM CDT

Austin police are seeing a dramatic increase in prescription drug driving cases.

Olin Rust is accused of popping three powerful medications before he slammed into several parked cars.

"He wouldn't stop, he kept gunning it, reversing, gunning it," recalled Nancy Holt.

According to an arrest report, Rust admitted to being on hydrocodone, morphine and soma when he hit at least five cars, a wall and a tree.

"We're seeing a big increase in pain killers," said Officer Robert Foster.

Foster is a drug recognition expert with the Austin Police Department. He said drugged driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

"It's just alcohol without alcohol so to speak," added Foster.

The problem has gotten so bad Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has incorporated the pill popping epidemic into its education and outreach.

"So much of it was already happening," said victim services specialist Carmen Castro.

Back on Toulouse Drive, shaken up neighbors are cleaning up after the crash, grateful no one got killed.

"I commend my neighbor who took ignition keys so he couldn't do any more damage," said David Holt.

The Holts and their neighbors are out thousands of dollars due to the damage.  They want Rust to pay up.
