Fighting Back: Technology Helping Police Solve More Crimes

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:07 PM CDT

The Austin Police Department is hoping key information from surveillance video solves a recent shooting in East Austin.

APD released a picture of the man accused of robbing then shooting two men at the Cameron Greens Apartments -- killing 19-year-old Reynaldo Ortega.

Police say more often they are getting photos of suspects. It's a tool that is helping them fight back.

"Sometimes we don't have the best description, but once we can get a video image or still photograph out to the public they say, 'hey, I know that person,'" said Senior Police Officer David Boyd.

Point Security tells us in the past year they have seen a 50 percent increase in people adding alarm systems with cameras.

"With cameras now you can see visually in real time with the break in occurring," said Point Security's General Sales Manager Chris Quinn.

He says as technology has progressed, prices have become more affordable.

"It can range anywhere from $30 to $60 a month depending on how deluxe you want your package," said Quinn.

A study shows people with security systems are 85 percent less likely to get broken into. Point Security says if a crime does occur, their equipment can help police catch criminals.
