New Austin Homeless Center Not Getting a Warm Welcome

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:08 PM CDT

People who live in the Woodland Hills community in East Austin pride themselves on their quiet neighborhood with white picket fences and neatly manicured lawns. But there's a new neighbor moving in and people here are definitely not rolling out the red carpet.

"It's actually going right behind my house, so it'll be really close to my house," says Jessica Hsu.

She's talking about a new community for the homeless.

Mobile Loaves and Fishes already owns the land.

We saw volunteers entering the property on Friday

Hsu says, "It obviously raised some concern for our residents because it might affect our home value and safety and things like that."

Residents we spoke with worry about an increase in crime and drugs in their neighborhood.

"Anywhere where the homeless are, there's going to be a higher rate of drugs, everybody knows that," said one man who didn't want to give us his name because he's homeless.

He says drug dealers frequently target the homeless shelters.

He says, "That's often times why people are homeless, because of their addiction."

Mobile Loaves and Fishes would not speak with us on camera.

They did give us a statement, but it did not address any of the resident concerns:

"The Community First village is currently in progress and will be designed to provide supportive, affordable and sustainable housing to the disabled chronically homeless. We are very excited about our upcoming announcement to unveil this innovative project!" said CEO Alan Graham
