Sentencing Phase Begins In Deaf Jogger Fatal Hit-And-Run Trial

Updated: Monday, June 9 2014, 05:53 PM CDT

The punishment phase began Monday in the hit-and-run death of Mark Gobble. Back in June of 2012 a car hit and killed the deaf father of two as he jogged on Slaughter Lane in Southwest Austin.

Driver Roman Turullos-Gonzalez left the scene, but later turned himself in and pleaded guilty.

Gobble was known as a leader and teacher in the deaf community.

His family and peers packed the courtroom wanting to know the fate of the man who took his life.

Gobble's mother, Diane, testified. She is also deaf.

She explained she rarely speaks, but found the words to stand up for her son.

She talked about how much joy he brought her and how much pain she had been in since the wreck on June 10 of 2012, the day before Gobble's birthday.

She says she saw her son the day before. When she got the news of his death, she says, "I was shaking, screaming, 'no, no, no, no.' and my baby died."

Gobble died of blunt force trauma. A medical examiner explained he had multiple wounds to his legs, chest and head.

Turullos-Gonzalez's sister took the stand in his defense. She says she took her brother to two houses and prayed over him before he turned himself in.

Reportedly Turullos-Gonzalez was on probation for drug use.

He faces two to 10 years in prison. Sentencing continues Tuesday.
