SW Austin Murder Victim Identified; Police Searching For Suspect

Updated: Monday, January 6 2014, 09:54 PM CST

Police have identified the victim of Austin's first homicide of 2014.

Police say 18-year-old Michael Chavez was killed at a home in the 5600 block of Porsche Lane in Southwest Austin on Saturday at approximately 5:28 p.m.

Officers had responded to a shots fired call at the home when they found him injured from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge where he died a short time later.

Detectives say the suspect entered the residence and open-fired. Even though there were several people in the home, only one person was injured.

Police are looking for at least one suspect, but do not believe that person is a danger to the public since it appears that this was not a random crime.

Investigators are asking the public for assistance in identifying and locating two vehicles that witnesses reported as leaving the scene after the incident occurred. One is a dark, four-door sedan and the second is described as a mid to late 90s Cadillac (possibly a Deville) with distinctive shiny emerald or teal green paint.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text "Tip 103" your message to CRIMES.
