The Crime You'll likely Become A Victim Of

Updated: Friday, May 10 2013, 10:04 PM CDT

You may carry a gun to protect yourself against criminals. But that won't do anything to help you against the crime you're most likely to fall victim to.

High profile crimes like murders, robberies, and assaults are down in Round Rock and the city of Austin. But Austin Police Department Staff Chief David Carter says the department's biggest challenge is property crime like burglary and theft.  He says, "That's one of the things that we have to get our hands around."

It's a struggle because the department is short more than 90 officers. While they focus to keep violent crime down, property crime has gone up.

However, we don't necessarily need police to control it.

Police say something visual in your car like an iPod cord can indicate to a potential thief that there may be something valuable inside. Leaving your doors unlocked also may make you an easy target.

Law enforcement officers in the surrounding areas tell us the same story as APD. Those downed windows, open garages, and valuables in plain sight could make you a victim.

Jared Border knows how it feels. He says, "You feel like you got violated. They break into your house and go through all your personal belongings." His Round Rock home was broken into after thieves kicked in the door. When they left they took the things Jared valued with them.

But with the exception of a thief forcing his way in these crimes are 100 percent preventable. Simply lock your doors, lock your windows, and hide your valuables.
