24 Hours Emergency Operations Center Open For F1 Weekend
Updated: Friday, November 16 2012, 04:45 PM CST
City, county and federal agencies are working together to monitor all F1 activities at the Circuit of the Americas track.
At 5:30 a.m. the area command at the Austin/Travis County Operations Center went online. The non-stop operation will run through the weekend, shutting down Monday night.
It was just a few weeks ago, huge crowds and upset runners were stuck in traffic waiting to get in the race track for the inaugural Formula Run 5k. Traffic was a nightmare and there were only 5,000 people involved. This weekend, 120,000are expected to hit the track site.
Steve Sexton from Circuit of the Americas explains what has changed.
"First of all our transportation plan is very comprehensive and tied to us Grand Prix. The Formula Run event was a smaller event and did not have a transportation plan attached to it," he said.
Now a dedicated road in and out of the track are in place. While race organizers are using essentially the same transportation playbook, Sexton says crews have already made final tweaks including changing signs to alert people to the major changes in the area.
As for nearby residents, Sexton had this message.
"There will be traffic. And traffic will move around the Circuit. We don't know customer behavior patterns. I think neighbors will definitely have access to their homes. We've promised them that. But that said, there'll be traffic."
