Austinites Check Out 1st Day Of F1

Updated: Friday, November 16 2012, 06:12 PM CST

Let the race begin: Friday morning, the Circuit of the Americas track officially became operational, as more than a dozen Formula One race cars roared across the track for the practice runs ahead of Sunday’s race.

Watching them were thousands of fans, many from all corners of the world. Fifteen percent of ticket buyers were from outside the U.S., hailing from 46 different countries, with Mexico leading the way. But about 40 percent of the buyers were from Texas, witnessing their first F1 race.

The roar of the F1 engines Friday morning was a wakeup call that could be heard for more than a mile, and one most Austinites are hearing for the first time.

"It's just a big rush,” said Mary Verhaeghe, of Austin. “Gets that blood flowing."

Verhaeghe’s says she’s been a racing and F1 fan for years. "This is the all-time, number one racing event in my lifetime,” said Verhaegae. “I love it."

For Austinite Kyle Bryson, it was a new twist on a favorite sport. "I've been to a number of races with NASCAR and Indy car," said Bryson.

On Saturday the sounds of the engines will be echoing through Southeast Travis County once again with the qualifying rounds, followed by the race on Sunday.
