F1 Fan Fest Draws Big Crowds To Downtown Austin
Updated: Friday, November 16 2012, 09:13 PM CST
Huge crowds of people are expected in Downtown Austin throughout the weekend for some free fun surrounding Formula One, but police want to make sure the fun doesn't get out of hand.
Fan Fest is going on Friday through Sunday night.
Police officers say it’s not quite what they expected -- crowds have been very calm, but police say they’ll be keeping a close eye on things.
Cars, fun and entertainment is what Fan Fest is all about, but security is tight with police on foot, bikes, and all terrain vehicles.
They’re keeping roads blocked and making sure the F1 crowd doesn't get out of hand.
Rodolfo Moreno and his family are here for the big event from Mexico City. "It's excellent really, Austin is an amazing place, I think all the authorities have been really really smart when it comes to this F1 race,” he says.
Moreno says he and his family have gone to F1 events in Monaco and Barcelona, but says Austin is different. "In those places they don't have so much infrastructure such as Austin.”
Brent Miller is from Seattle says it’s his first time attending an F1 event and has seen police out in full force. "It's actually not too bad,” he says. "I think it's tough for any city to get so many people for one weekend. I think you guys are actually doing a good job.”
Police say they are expecting a larger crowd Saturday when the festival kicks off at 10 a.m.
