Texas Gov. Perry Promotes Austin F1 Race During Italy Trip

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 05:06 PM CDT

Texas Gov. Rick Perry spent the weekend promoting the upcoming November Formula 1 race in Austin while on an economic development trip in Italy.

The governor attended the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at the Monza Circuit on Sunday and met with Bobby Epstein, chairman and founder of the Circuit of the Americas, and Stefano Domenicali, head of Ferrari Racing.

The race in Austin is from November 16-18. The track is currently under construction. Once fully operational, Perry says race related events are expected to attract 1.2 million visitors annually, with an economic impact expected at around $400-500 million.

On Saturday, the governor met with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and Israeli President Shimon Peres to discuss investment in and trade with Texas.

Gov. Perry and First Lady Anita Perry are in Italy for the economic development trip until Wednesday. A spokesperson for Gov. Perry says no tax dollars will be used for the Perry’s travel and accommodations on the trip.
