6-Year-Old Dallas Girl With The Flu Dies

Updated: Tuesday, January 15 2013, 03:35 PM CST

A Dallas six-year-old girl died Tuesday after being diagnosed with the flu and sent home from a Mesquite hospital.

Tahila Johnson woke up Monday with a fever and body aches.

I went to touch her and she said, "Ow, that hurts. I'm sore."  That doesn't sound good," Grandmother  Veleta Johnson said.

By that evening, her grandmother grew so worried she and Tahila's father took the little girl to Dallas Regional Medical Center's ER where they waited hours to see a nurse practioner.

"It took four hours before we actually got back there.  But it took 10 minutes for them to tell us she had the flu and send us home," Veleta Johnson said.

That night she watched over her granddaughter. At 2 a.m., she found Tahila snoring. At 6:30 a.m., she found her lying oddly still.

"When I got in there to check on her, she was not moving. I shook her, and that's when I knew," Johnson said.

She called her son, who had tucked his daughter into bed some nine hours earlier.

"I picked her up and was holding on to her. Last night, I kissed her and told her I loved her," Earl Johnson said.

The Johnson family isn't sure what happened.

"Honestly, I don't know what she died from because they didn't test her for anything," Earl Johnson said.

He said he could only trust the nurse's advice. Now he wonders if he should have.

"Just make sure they run the proper tests and procedures," Johnson said.  "Just don't take their word."

Ft. Worth affiliate KTVT was unable to reach the Dallas Regional Medical Center for comment Tuesday. The Dallas Medical Examiner has not yet determined Tahila's cause of death.
