Fridays With Uncle Fred 9/06/2013

Updated: Friday, September 6 2013, 08:00 AM CDT

This morning we talked about the return of football to Southwestern University in Georgetown.  Southwestern had a great program during World War II thanks to a Navy training programs which brought a lot of students who turned out to be great football players.  The war ended, the players went elsewhere and the program went into decline and was finally shut down in 1951.  Now thanks to a $5 million grant from an alum, football is back.  Saturday at 7:00pm the Southwestern Pirates take on Trinity Lutheran at Georgetown ISD’s Birkendalh Stadium.  Read more about Southwestern University’s new football progam here.

Dr. Lamia Kadir, a family practice physician from  St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, joined us to talk about Pertussis. She stressed prevention and everyone getting vaccinated against the ailment.  Pertussis, aka Whooping Cough, is especially serious for small children and is easily spread by coughs and sneezes.

And Mohib Mamujee, owner of Millennium Tours, told us how excited he is about British Airlines starting non-stop flights from Austin to London next year. Mamujee already books student tour groups from Baylor and Texas State to London.  He says the non-stops will eliminate weather delays and luggage mix-ups  associated with connecting flights.   British Air’s non-stop flights between Austin and London begin March 2014.
