13 People Found Inside Truck In South Austin, Driver Missing

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

A manhunt involving a helicopter and K9s led to 13 people found inside of the truck, and the driver missing. That's the result of a traffic stop this morning that brought out Border Patrol ICE, DPS and APD. It all started around 12:30 a.m. Thursday near 1-35 and FM 1626 in south Austin

A lieutenant with the Department of Public Safety tells us all 13 have been turned over to Border Patrol. The group was put into a marked van and driven off around 4 a.m. DPS says Border Patrol was planning to further interview the group. The lieutenant says 12 were from Mexico, one from El Salvador, though they still do not know why they were in the truck.

Trooper Robbie Barrera of DPS says troopers pulled the Ford pickup over around 12:30 going northbound on I-35 because it did not have a license plate lamp and did not signal when changing lanes. During the stop, troopers saw several people in the bed and cab of the pickup. That's when troopers say the driver and some of the passengers in the truck fled. The passengers were found a short time later, but an Austin Police helicopter and three K-9 units were searching for the driver. DPS says they know who the driver is, he'll be charged at minimum for fleeing the scene during a traffic stop. Troopers believe the pickup was coming from San Antonio.

There were no reported injuries or weapons found.
