Americans Spending Billions On Halloween Costumes

Updated: Wednesday, October 23 2013, 08:17 AM CDT

Halloween is right around the corner and Americans plan on spending a whole lot of money to be outfitted with the coolest costumes. According to the National Retail Federation’s annual Halloween survey consumers plan on spending a whopping $1.04 billion on kids' costumes this year and an insane $1.22 billion for adults to play dress-up.

As we near closer to the 31st you may notice some of your Halloween stores stock diminishing, but not at Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds on South Congress. There you'll find thousands of Halloween costumes to buy and rent for both kids and adults. Prices range depending on how intricate of a costume you want. The best thing about Lucy in Disguise is that you can mix and match separates and accessories to make a truly unique costume.

This year in addition to their vast collection, you can expect to see costumes inspired by viral videos like "What did the fox say?" and hit shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

During our visit at Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds manager Fernie Renteria shared some industry inside information with us. Have you ever wondered why costumes are so expensive? He says it's because of licensing. "The companies that own the big blockbuster movies and video games and big cartoons can raise their prices a little bit more. So unfortunately the cost can go down to the consumer," Renteria.

Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds is open year round and supply local performers with their costumes as well as students who need to be a character for the day for a school project.
