Arrested UT Students to Speak Thursday

Updated: Thursday, April 24 2014, 07:44 AM CDT
At noon Thursday, at least 17 students arrested in a protest Wednesday will share their side of the story. The students had been staging a sit-in inside the office of UT President Bill Powers to protest a plan that includes cutting 500 jobs on campus. The students arrested are expected to be out of jail by Thursday morning and will meet with reporters at noon on the West Mall on UT's campus.

As part of the Shared Services Plan, 500 staff jobs would be cut to save money and be more efficient. Protestors say hundreds of students, faculty, and staff have campaigned against the plan for 14 months but UT moved ahead with it anyway. They also say President Powers has refused to meet with the coalition. Many of those opposed are questioning the track record of Accenture, the consultant that helped put the plan together.

So far, UT's media team and the Office of the President have not responded to KEYE TV's request for comment.
