Barton Springs Pool To Reopen

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

Repairs to the Barton Springs bypass culvert and downstream dam will be completed this week and the pool is scheduled to reopen at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30.  Barton Springs Pool has been closed since December 12, 2012 to repair the bypass culvert that helps protect the water quality in the pool and allows it to remain open after most small storms.

The culvert diverts floodwaters as well as the normal flow of Barton Creek around the pool.  The floodwaters tend to wash high levels of sediment, lawn chemicals, bacteria and other pollutants down the creek and into the pool.  The culvert was originally built in 1974 and was suffering from age and wear and tear.  This project should extend the life of the culvert for another 25 years. Also, a crack in the downstream dam was repaired.

Barton Springs Pool is home to the endangered Barton Springs Salamander as well as the Austin Blind Salamander, a candidate species for endangered listing.  Biologists report that the immediate effects on salamanders in the pool were as expected or less.  They found a few salamanders in the construction areas. These salamanders were in good health and were taken back to undisturbed habitat.  Biologists do not expect any long-term effects on the salamander populations but will continue closely monitoring them for the next few months.

Barton springs pool schedule beginning March 30:

5 - 8 a.m.  Swim at your own risk

8 a.m. -  8 p.m.  Guarded swim.

Closed Thursdays 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. for cleaning.
