Bike Share Rolls Out Demo Rental Station

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT

Bike Share rolls out in the City of Austin in December and starting this week Central Texans can demo the new program. Organizers have borrowed a demo from San Antonio to give residents an idea of what the bike stations will look like. Each station will have 10-20 bikes available to rent at $8 a day or $80 for an annual membership.

"We're going to have 40 stations and 400 bikes launching in December allowing people to get around downtown," says Elliot McFarrden, Executive Director of Bike Share.

The height of the cushioned cruiser seats are adjustable and come with basket and a bike lock. McFarrden says he's not concerned about thefts because the bike parts are specific to Bike Share and to remove them you need special tools. The bikes are also stocked with GPS's so if a bike is stolen it can be located.

Central Texans are being asked to vote on where they would like the first bike stations to be setup in the City of Austin. You can also vote on what color you think the bike should be. Click the link to cast your vote.
