City Moves Forward on Rental Registration Program

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

New this morning, Austin approves a pilot program to keep an eye on negligent landlords and protect renters.

City leaders have discussed the rental registry several times since last year’s Woodridge balcony collapse.

Overnight, Austin City Council gave the OK to direct the City Manager to create a one-year pilot registration program for rental properties in certain neighborhoods.

Rundberg is one of those areas. The city says rental registry will help APD work with property owners here to improve the quality of life, health, and safety of residents. The move also could create higher fines for repeat code violators.

Code Compliance officials say this program will help solve many code compliance issues with rental properties. City officials say the final program should require registration for multifamily rental properties and possibly some single family or duplex rentals. Council wants to see a finalized plan in the next 90 days.
