Cool Schools, John H. Reagan High School

Updated: Friday, November 15 2013, 08:56 AM CST

John H. Reagan Early College High School has made KEYE TV's list for Cool Schools and if you tuned in Friday morning you would have understood why.

The Soul Raiders Marching Band, cheerleaders and dancers boogied down with modern music choices that no doubt had our viewers shaking it while they drank their morning coffee. Forget just standing there with an instrument in hand, the Soul Raiders are a performance style band. Just imagine a 20's Big Band playing modern jazz music. To top that off, we were also entertained by a smaller group of students that make up the school's New Orleans Funk Band. They're so good, they've been hired to perform at a number of special events and even weddings. Band director Ormide Armstrong, told KEYE he's excited to announce Reagan will soon have an orchestra too.

Reagan High School isn't all about playing, Principal Anabel Garza says students and faculty consistently work towards a healthy balance between extracurricular activities and school work. Students are able to obtain up to 60 college credits before ever leaving high school. Students also participate in the Avid program, which prepares students for 4-year college eligibility.

Atheletics Director Keith Carey sees first hand students balancing hard work in the classroom with hard work on the field. He was proud to tell us the athletic program is off to a great start this year. The football team is mid season, the volleyball team made it to the playoffs, the cross country team made second in district and the tennis team made regionals.

KEYE Morning News team would like to give a big shout out to all the students and faculty members who woke up super early on a Friday to participate in our Cool Schools segment. Don't forget to click on the play button to see the Soul Raiders, cheerleaders and dancers perform. You can also head to Facebook for a Cool Schools photo album.
