Experts Want Voice-Command Texting Banned

Updated: Thursday, December 20 2012, 11:22 AM CST
Safety experts are asking lawmakers in California to repeal a new law that allows voice-command texting. The National Safety Council says that even if their hands are free the drivers are still distracted.

The last thing drivers need is more distractions.

When you're cruising I-35 during rush hour there is so much to keep track of.  So you might be surprised to learn that nearly half of all young drivers add the digital distraction of their smart phone to their lengthy to-do list behind the wheel.

A survey recently released by State Farm shows that among young drivers ages 18-29 accessing the internet while driving has soared to 48 percent, reading social media while driving increased to 36 percent and checking e-mail while driving jumped to 43 percent.

Experts say you're 23 times more likely to have an accident if you're texting while driving.  Driving safely is all about keeping your eyes on the road -- and not on your smart phone.
