Fire Department Work Heavy Residential Fire

Updated: Friday, October 25 2013, 12:15 PM CDT

Austin Fire Department battled a heavy house fire this morning in south Austin.

According to PIO Palmer Buck, a call was received of a structure fire around 6:30 a.m.  Units responded to the 600 block of Dawson Rd to find a two-story house fully involved with fire coming out of the roof.

Firefighters had to go into defensive mode in order to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring houses.  One house next to it did receive some fire damage.

The fire was under control approximately two hours later.

No one was home in the primary house but two people in the neighboring house were evacuated.

No injuries to either residents or firefighters have been reported.

The primary structure was totally destroyed.  One person has been displaced and is being assisted by the Red Cross.  The residents of the fire-damaged neighboring house will be allowed back later on Friday.

Total damage is estimated to be $60,000 in both structure and content loss.  Also $40,000 damage to exterior items, including a car, motorcycle and the exterior wall of the neighboring home.  Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
