Four-County Police Chase Ends In SWAT Standoff

Updated: Tuesday, September 17 2013, 06:48 AM CDT
Breaking overnight, a nearly 100-mile, high-speed chase through four counties ends in a SWAT standoff near Pflugerville and a Houston man behind bars. Right now, authorities tell only KEYETV News that Cole Flores, 26, sped off after an officer pulled him over in Burton, halfway between Austin and Houston along U.S. Highway 290.

Lt. Bryce Miller of Travis County Sheriff's Office tells KEYETV it all started when a Burton police officer pulled over Flores in Burton. During that traffic stop, Lt. Miller says Flores sped off, the officer chased him, with help from other agencies, all the way to a gas station parking lot at I-35 and Grand Avenue Parkway. Lt. Miller says the driver stopped on his own around 10 p.m., parked between the pumps, and sat in his car with SWAT surrounding it. Authorities eventually took the driver into custody around midnight. Throughout the standoff, they blocked off nearby streets and said they took the right steps.

"We won't get involved in a chase like this unless our assistance is requested, and obviously when he pulled over in his car and barricaded himself in our county, our assistance was requested," said Lt. Miller. "(The) few patrons in the store, we asked them to stay put until we got Mr. Flores into custody."

Lt. Miller tells us Flores had no warrants, no weapons, no drugs, and no signs of intoxication, so he doesn't know why he allegedly took off, or why the Burton PD officer pulled him over. Right now, he tells KEYETV they booked Flores in the Travis County Jail for evading arrest and that Burton Police will get their own warrant for what happened in Washington County.

Lt. Miller pointed out a Burton police officer at the gas station he said was present during the chase from start to finish. That officer told KEYETV he was running late, did not want to talk, and drove off.
