Gadget Guy: Time Warner To Offer City-wide Wi-Fi

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

The competition for your Internet service dollars continues to heat up.  Now it's Time Warner Cable sweetening their offer by throwing in free citywide Wi-Fi for its Internet subscribers.  So you can have your cable modem at the house but still access the web around town.  It's not quite citywide right now... In fact according to their web site coverage map they've only built out a stretch of Barton Springs Road between Zilker Park and South Congress Avenue.  There are also Android and iPhone apps to help you find your way.

Access to the network is free for Time Warner Cable customers with at least standard Internet service as well as Time Warner Cable Business Class Internet customers.  And if you don't have Time Warner Internet at home the company will offer some free trial and prepaid access options for non-subscribers.

Time Warner's move comes on the heels of Google announcing it was going to bring its Google Fiber high-speed Internet network to Austin.  But that's home service.  Time Warner hopes to appeal to customers wanting to access the web on the go.
