Gov. Perry to Honor Austin Police Officers, West Firefighters

Updated: Thursday, September 12 2013, 06:48 AM CDT
On Thursday, Gov. Rick Perry will pay tribute to the families of the first responders killed in the West fertilizer plant explosion, along with those killed or seriously injured across Texas with the Star of Texas Award. This year, that includes some first responders from Austin and a new group getting recognized.

This year, Gov. Perry will award 74 people the Star of Texas Award. That includes four Austin police officers seriously hurt in the line of duty, along with those first responders killed in April’s West fertilizer plant explosion.

This year, for the first time, the governor is recognizing citizens seriously injured or killed while helping first responders.

This comes after Texas lawmakers unanimously passed a new law earlier this year. Three citizens will get the award for this first go-around, including two killed in the West explosion.

The Star of Texas ceremony starts at 9 a.m. Thursday at Shoreline Church. To watch it live, click here:
