Lane Restriping Downtown Ahead Of MetroRapid Weekend Launch

Updated: Wednesday, January 22 2014, 07:23 AM CST
In just a few hours, crews will finish the last piece of construction ahead of this weekend’s MetroRapid launch.

That’s CapMetro’s new rapid bus service, whose first leg will run along two of Austin’s busiest streets: Lamar and Congress.

Starting at 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, crews are turning the far right lanes of Lavaca between 3rd and 6th into a “transit priority lane”.

CapMetro expects it to impact drivers’ commute. Once complete, around 60 buses will travel through these lanes every hour.

CapMetro officials say the new striping is down to make sure those buses stay on schedule along the congested stretch of downtown

These lanes are only on Lavaca and Guadalupe Streets downtown between Cesar Chavez and MLK Jr. Boulevard, but here’s what they’ll mean for you as a driver.

As the markings indicate, they’re for buses only.

If you’re driving, you can only use them if you’re making a right turn.

If you try and use them when you’re not supposed to, police will be on the lookout and can write you a ticket.

It also means you’ll have 95 fewer parking spaces to choose from downtown since crews are taking those out during construction.Lane Restriping Downtown Ahead Of MetroRapid Weekend Launch
