LBJ Library Offers Free Admission For Presidents Day

Updated: Monday, February 17 2014, 10:21 AM CST

Brush up on your U.S. history for free this Presidents Day. In honor of the federal holiday, the LBJ Library, located on the campus of the University of Texas, is offering free admission.

For many of us we haven't learned basic U.S. history since elementary school and why we celebrate certain holidays has been forgotten. We asked Austinites some basic Presidents Day trivia and from their lack of knowledge it seems as though many don't really know why we celebrate the holiday or who it honors.

There's actually no agreement on which presidents are supposed to be honored on Presidents Day. Even more confusing, the holiday goes by two names, Presidents Day and then the federal government officially calls it Washington's Birthday.

Presidents Day was originally established to celebrate George Washington's birthday which is on February 22nd, but in the 1960's congress shifted the celebration to a Monday to create more three day weekends and because of that, the holiday slowly became a celebration of all presidents.

Head to the LBJ Library to learn even more U.S. history. Doors open at 9:00 am.
